Immigration advocates found a reason for optimism after House Speaker John Boehner allowed a vote on the two-year budget deal. Despite a faction within the House that was in opposition of the bill, Boehner attacked the factions and said they were “standing in the way of progress.” Immigration advocates are hoping he will do the same to factions within the House in regards to immigration reform in the next year.

Speaker Boehner took a strong stance against members of the House who were hoping to block important votes regarding certain legislation measures.” I think they’re pushing our members in places where they don’t want to be. And frankly, I just think that they’ve lost all credibility.”
Immigration advocates are hoping Boehner will do something similar to tea party members who have stood against immigration the entire time the legislation was proposed. Boehner has been criticized for not wanting to make any changes in regards to immigration. However, he recently hired a new staff member to specifically focus on immigration legislation which has been viewed as a positive step from all.
Additionally, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte stated in a hearing that immigration reform would be a “top priority” in 2014.
Although immigration supporters are hopeful and excited that Congress will continue to keep immigration as an important priority during the next year, they are not planning on letting down from their push for improved immigration policies in the U.S. Over 1,000 supporters flooded congressional offices to draw attention to leaders that the inaction with immigration reform bills this year is not acceptable. Protestors and supporters are going to continue to rally to inform Congress that they will not forget about immigration. They will be back as soon as Congress comes back from their winter break.
