Immigration Advocates Arrested Outside White House for Protesting Obama Immigration Policies

Protestors stood outside of the White House for hours protesting the inaction seen in Congress over the course of the last few months. The group wanted to raise awareness to the high levels of deportations still going on even though a bill that almost passed would have put an end to this. The protests show that immigration transcends political lines and the people are holding lawmakers accountable for their actions regardless of their beliefs.

Protestors want more than DACA

With immigration stalled in Congress, activists are turning their attention back to the administration and what they can do to push forward change. Bishop Minerva Carcano is the first Hispanic woman to become a bishop in the U.S. and stated “We are grateful for DACA, but it is not enough.” After the police were tipped off that the protest would occur, they came in and quietly began arresting people. “We are not criminals. We are decent people who have a right overseas medications online like anyone else to a decent life,” said Pilar Molina, whose husband is in the removal process right now.

Unfilled Quota leads to innocent immigrants being deported

This demonstration is one of many where protestors were arrested in their acts of civil disobedience. Because of this, President Obama is under more pressure than ever to try to find a way to stop deportations without looking at Congress. There have been a record number of deportations under the Obama Administration with ICE deporting over 2 million people since 2009. The activists are saying that the President has created a quota of removing 400,000 criminal immigrants but because he cannot fill that quota, innocent hard working immigrants are being deported. “…He has resorted to deporting illegal immigrants with no criminal records and deep ties to family in the U.S.”
