Why is not taking an immigration benefit as soon as it becomes available to you one of the biggest mistakes that people make in immigration land?
Hi. I’m Jim Hacking, immigration attorney here in Saint Louis Missouri.
We have a lot of fun on these videos, we enjoy making them and teaching people about different aspects of immigration law, telling stories about immigration and the things that we’ve come to learn in our years of practice.
But one of the biggest things that we want these videos to be used for is to tell people about the mistakes that they make in immigration and without a doubt, one of the biggest mistakes that we’ve seen time and time again is when people don’t take an immigration benefit when they can. And what do I mean by that? What I’m talking about are the people who have a long time green card who think nothing bad’s ever going to happen to me. I’m just like anybody else. They’ve been here so long without any immigration problems that they think that they are just like a citizen. And I’m here to tell you that you’re not.
If you have a green card and you’ve been waiting for some reason to not get your citizenship, you are fulling yourself. You just don’t know all the ways that can come back to haunt you and I don’t mean to chide you, I’m just trying to urge you to take action and to get your citizenship. Same thing if you’re here on a Visa or if you come on asylum. We’ve had many people come to our office in a big trouble because although they were granted asylum or refugee status, they never got around to getting their green card and if you’re in that kind of situation, you are barely here. You’re barely in the united states. It’s as if you’re still knocking at the door onto the law. You might have been here 10 years, 15 years, you might think that you’re untouchable but if you make a mistake, you’re out of here.
I don’t mean to chastise you. I want you to feel good about what you’re doing but I also want you to understand the severity of what you’re doing.
If you get your green card, get your citizenship. Move along in the process. Every immigrant should be thinking citizenship. That is the gold standard, that is what we are after, that is the path that we have started on and if you’re laying around in one of the rest stops, if you’re here on a Visa, if you’re here on a green card and you’re not taking the next step, these are the kind of things that can happen to you, you can lose your lawful permanent resident status by getting involved in some kind of criminal activity or staying outside the United States for too long.
Everyone thinks that’s not going to happen to me. But I’m here to tell you that it can happen to you and it does happen and it’s really sad when people have to either start all over or they have to leave the United States in order to go fix their mistake. So don’t let that happen to you.
If you are eligible for immigration benefit and you want to move forward, pick up that phone and give us a call, 314-961-8200 or e-mail me, firstname.lastname@example.org. We will set you straight, we’ll get you back on the straight path to citizenship. We’ll hope you move along and we’ll teach you why just doing nothing is not acceptable.
Thanks a lot.
