What If I Don't Get My Mail From USCIS

Spread the love

What happens when I don't get my mail from USCIS? Hi, I'm Jim Hacking, immigration lawyer practicing law throughout the United States at our office here in St. Louis, Missouri. I'm still on the pandemic quarantine waiting to get my Coronavirus results. But in this video, we're going to talk about what happens when your mail doesn't get to you from USCIS. So if you are filing for a case with USCIS, you definitely want to sign up for electronic alerts. You can do that at the uscis.gov website. And the reason you want to do that is sometimes the mail doesn't get to you, and that can be due to USCIS Air, it can be due to post office air, it can be due to lots of different things. But when you don't get your mail, they send you an alert that says, hey, you did not respond, or you did not receive the mail that we sent to you. What's up with your address, you might need to update your address.

So if this happens and it's just a notice, then I would hop on the electronic portal and find out what they've been trying to tell you. You could also call the USCIS number, the 1-800 number to find out what's going on with your case. And then finally, you're also going to want to make sure that you update your address again with USCIS. So if I got a notice like that, I would talk to the person on the 1-800 number and ask them, what address do you have on file for me, I check with the post office to make sure, because what you definitely don't want to happen is if you put on your forms that you want your Green Card to be mailed to your house or your work card, if they have a bad address for you, that's going to get returned to sender. And then you're talking about filing for a replacement Green Card or a placement of work card. It's a huge, huge hassle.

So having an accurate address with USCIS is essential. And you want to make sure that your address is correct, especially at the time that they mail you any identity documents like a Green Card or a work card. Of course, this is one of the benefits of working with a lawyer is you can use the lawyer's address and have it sent to them. We have much less of a problem with that than with individuals using their home email or home mailing addresses. If you have questions about this, give us a call at 314-961-8200. You can email us at [email protected]. Be sure to join us in our Facebook group, which is called Immigrant Home. And if you liked this video, we ask that you please share it out on social so that you get updates whenever we make videos just like this one. Thanks a lot. Have a great day.
