Do you guys file mandamus? Hi, I'm Jim Hacking, immigration lawyer practicing law throughout the United States at our offices in St. Louis, San Diego and Washington, DC. Got a question on the YouTube channel the other day, do you guys file mandamus? Do we file mandamus? We file mandamus every single day and twice on Sunday. I really got tickled by that question, and I thought, well, that just goes to show you that different people find you at different stages in their life, and they might have just stumbled upon my YouTube channel and don't understand that we have sued USCIS and the State Department and Homeland Security hundreds of times. As of the recording of this video, over 800 times. Filing writs of mandamus is my favorite thing to do. A writ of mandamus is a request to a federal judge to compel an executive branch member, usually an agency like the State Department or USCIS, to do something that they are legally obligated to do.
I was talking to one of the US attorneys in Washington, DC that I deal with often on my lawsuits. And I was talking to her about the state of affairs in DC and about our lawsuits. They've been handling them a little bit differently, and we were talking, and she said that she deals with our office the most. And then she named another lawyer that she deals with. And then she said, "I deal with a bunch of one-offs." A one-off is someone who stumbles their way into mandamus and doesn't do it on a regular basis.
I really enjoy doing mandamus work. I enjoy suing them for these immigration delays. And the reason I enjoy it so much is because I get to take people who have literally been banging their head on the wall, trying to get action on their cases, and they're stuck. They're either stuck at USCIS, they're stuck at the National Visa Center, or they're stuck at the embassy. And when we sue them, things start moving. So in answer to this fine fellow's question, we do file mandamus. We file them all the time, and we enjoy doing mandamus lawsuits. It's pretty much what I spend, what Jim spends most of his time doing when it comes to day-to-day work in the office.
Now with us opening that office in Washington, DC, I am more involved at the moment in everyday USCIS cases like VAWA cases, I601 waivers, naturalization, green card interviews, spouse cases, overseas visas. So I'm back in a lot more of the day-to-day immigration type stuff, but usually what I'm spending my time doing is suing USCIS in Washington, DC. We're filing many of these lawsuits. So yeah, the answer to the question is yeah, buddy, we file mandamus. I would venture to say that we've probably filed more than anybody. I don't know that for sure. So I don't want to say that, but we have filed hundreds and hundreds and hundreds, and we will continue to do so.
